Research Justice at AMC!

This year, I’ll be organizing a radical librarians’ caucus at the Allied Media Conference. It’s my first time attending AMC, although I’ve been wanting to go for years, and I can’t wait to meet other radical library folk.

Here’s my session!

Radical Librarians’ Lunchtime Caucus

FRIDAY – JUNE 21, 2013: LUNCH CAUCUS: FRI 12:45PM – 1:45PM
Education 300

How do libraries support media justice, and how do they hinder it? This caucus will give librarians and library-lovers a space to talk about goals and obstacles in turning libraries of all kinds into independent media hubs. Join us to dream, rant, strategize, share skills and your passion for indie media in libraries.

What is research justice, you ask? Why, you can learn about it at Here’s a snippet:

Research Justice believes that communities are experts. Communities have first hand experience of oppressions, and research is a tool to package those experiences so that it can be used strategically to effect change. But is it “Just Research” or “just research”?

The Research Justice Track of the Allied Media Conference aligns with Data Center’s definition of Research Justice. They define Research Justice as spaces in which communities:

  1. Are recognized as experts;

  2. Have equal access to and control over information that impacts the community;

  3. Have the capacity to produce research that reflects the community’s experiences;

  4. Are able to use all forms of community knowledge to effectively advance their agenda; and

  5. Have the power to define knowledge and decide how resources get delegated.
